We are looking for a coordinator for research projects conducted at the Brain Research Unit of the University of Eastern Finland. The position will be hosted by the Faculty of Health Sciences on the Kuopio campus and will start on 1 November 2023. Read more below, and apply by 2 October 2023.

Position and salary

As a coordinator, you will work in the Brain Research Unit (BRU) at the School of Medicine, the Institute of Clinical Medicine, on the Kuopio campus. The School of Medicine belongs to the Faculty of Health Sciences.

BRU conducts high-quality clinical research and drug research and collaborates with local, Finnish and international academic research groups and the pharmaceutical industry. The unit’s areas of competence particularly include brain biomarker analyses, epidemiological studies as well as clinical drug trials, multimodal lifestyle-based trials, diagnostics, prevention and treatment of neurogenerative diseases and cerebrovascular disorders. The unit also has the capacity to examine the genetic background, risk factors and pathogenetic mechanisms of polygenic diseases. BRU plays a key role as a provider of research, development and innovation services and infrastructure, and enables brain health research at the international top level. BRU is a partner in a consortium project involving collaboration between academia and pharmaceutical industry, bioindustry and IT/ICT companies. The main focus is on early risk detection, early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other related diseases, and dementia prevention, considering also potential implementation in clinical practice.

The project studies older adults (volunteers and/or clinical patients), and development and/or assessment of various prediction, diagnostic and prevention tools, such as fluid and digital biomarkers, eHealth tools and software for data collection and analysis, and/or delivery of non-pharmacological/lifestyle-based interventions. BRU is also planning and conducting other projects of lifestyle-based interventions for brain diseases.

The coordinator has the following responsibilities:

  • Day-to-day monitoring and management of project activities at BRU, incl. timeline management, and assisting the Principal Investigator and Director of BRU in monitoring and ensuring the progress of the project
  • Maintaining documents and records of the project, and assisting project team members in tasks related to the preparation of documents at BRU
  • Communication with both academic and industry partners (Finnish and international), assisting project team members at BRU in the scheduling of meetings, and writing meeting notes, where relevant
  • Project dissemination in collaboration with Kuopio Brain & Mind.

The position will be filled for a two-year term starting on 1 November 2023 (1 November 2023 – 31 October 2025), with the possibility of extension. The position is filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to the launching of coordination activities at the brain research unit and project work within the consortium project. The probationary period of new employees is 6 months.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities (other expert and support staff). The salary consists of a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. In this position, the job-related salary element is based on level 9 of the job requirement level chart. In addition, a personal salary element is paid, which is at first 10-27% of the job-related salary element. Depending on the personal salary element, the salary will be at the beginning of the employment relationship approximately EUR 3,465.75-4,001.36 /month.

  • hold an applicable Master’s degree
  • have excellent Finnish and English language skills
  • have good networking and cooperation skills in a multidisciplinary environment and also internationally.

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • knowledge of medicine or the health care sector
  • a PhD in a relevant field
  • experience in similar tasks experience of digitalisation, especially in health care or similar services
  • experience in business cooperation
  • good organisational and teamwork skills.
