We are seeking a Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Sustainable Chemical Engineering. The post will be hosted by the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Forestry, and Technology on the Joensuu campus. The position will be filled as from 1 August 2024 (or as agreed).

Role and salary

The Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) will work in the field of Sustainable Chemical Engineering. The research and teaching duties will focus on the development, optimization and sustainability impact assessment of processes used in the production of energy, material or chemical products. The post will strengthen interdisciplinary research and multidisciplinary education in accordance with the university’s strategy, especially in the field of technology. Process and product design, process modelling or development of sustainability assessment methods, for example, may be highlighted in the applicant’s skills profile.

The duties of Professor/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) include conducting, developing and managing research in the field and related national and international education, as well as responsibility for scientific postgraduate education in the field in accordance with the job title. The professorship emphasizes comprehensive leadership and responsibility for research and education in the field. The Professor/Associate Professor will be responsible for the acquisition of external funding and for international research cooperation and networking in the field. The post also includes societal expert and interaction activities.

The post of Professor will be filled as of 1 August 2024 (or as agreed) until further notice. In the case of an Associate Professor (Tenure Track), the post will be filled for a four-year term starting on 1 August 2024 (or as agreed). The post of Associate Professor is filled for a fixed term due to it being a Tenure Track position. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The criteria, goals and results to be achieved during the term in order to proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track (Professor) will be agreed upon in detail with the person appointed as Associate Professor when signing the contract of employment.

The salary of the post is based on the salary system for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In the case of a Professor, the salary is based on levels 8-11 of the job requirement level chart of the salary system for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities (€5223,57 – 7697,25 /month) and in the case of an Associate Professor, on level 7 of the job requirement level chart (€4320,23 /month). In addition to the job-related salary element, the salary is supplemented with a personal salary element, which can be a maximum of 50% of the job-related salary element.

The languages of instruction and supervision at the Department of Chemistry are Finnish and English. The English language skills required by the teaching and research duties of the Professor/Associate Professor are sufficient.
