The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Project Researcher in Peatland and Soil Ecology position at the School of Forest Sciences on the Joensuu campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term of one year as from 1 May 2025 (or starting date as agreed).

Role and salary

We are looking for a highly motivated Project Researcher in Peatland and Soil Ecology. The duties of the Project Researcher are related to research projects conducted in the Peat&Trees - Peatland and Soil Ecology Research Group (website), led by Professor Eeva-Stiina Tuittila, on the ecological restoration of peatlands, the role of peatlands as carbon sinks and the response of peatlands to climate change. The aim of the projects is to study changes in peatland species composition and ecosystem functioning in relation to climate change and peatland restoration.

The Project Researcher’s work will include processing existing biological and gas exchange data as well as collecting new data. In addition to field measurements, data analysis and scientific writing, the duties may also include supervising students’ fieldwork. It is also possible to write a doctoral dissertation on the topic of a project, in which case the title will be Doctoral Researcher.

The position will be filled for a fixed term of one year as from 1 May 2025 (or as agreed). The position is filled for a fixed term due to a specific project task. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. The job-related salary element is EUR 2,220 /month, based on level 2 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. Depending on the personal salary element, the salary will be approximately EUR 2,580-2,720 /month at the beginning of the employment.

Our requirements and expectations

Requirements:

  • a Master’s degree in forest sciences, biology, ecology or a related field
  • a good command of the English language

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • experience in field work
  • knowledge of peatland vegetation
  • skills related to greenhouse gas measurements, carbon flux data analysis, and the use of R programming package

Haemme projektitutkijaa Itä-Suomen Yliopiston Peat&Trees - Suo- ja maaekologian tutkimusryhmään. Tehtävä sijoittuu luonnontieteiden, metsätieteiden ja tekniikan tiedekuntaan metsätieteiden osastolle Joensuun kampukselle. Tehtävä alkaa 1.5.2025 (tai sopimuksen mukaan) ja on vuoden määräaikainen tehtävä. Tässä tehtävässä tehtäväkohtainen palkanosa on vaativuustasoluokittelussa tasolla 2. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaiseen suoriutumiseen perustuvaa palkanosaa, joka on 6-50 % tehtäväkohtaisesta palkanosasta. Tehtävässä edellytetään hyvää englannin kielen taitoa.​
