The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (Medical Physics and Engineering) in the Biophysics Research Group at the Department of Technical Physics on the Kuopio campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term of two and a half years as from 1 February 2026 (or starting date as agreed).

Please find more information below and submit your application no later than 18 December 2025.

Role and salary

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to work full-time in the field of medical physics and engineering, particularly on low field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The position is within the Research Council of Finland (RCF) consortium project focusing on the development of low-field MRI hardware, sequences, image reconstruction and applications, in the Quantitative MRI research group at the Department of Technical Physics. The aim of the project is to develop and validate image reconstruction methods and hardware for low-field (~50 mT) magnetic resonance imaging.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:

  • developing and constructing an open-source, open-hardware low-field MRI device
  • implementing and testing software, especially pulse sequences on the low-field device, in close collaboration with other consortium researchers
  • developing and executing applications on low-field MRI
  • collaborating with national and international research institutions and companies
  • writing scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • acquiring and implementing third-party funded projects.

Other responsibilities include mentoring and supervising PhD students, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students and interns, as well as taking part in scientific collaborations. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you also have the opportunity to participate in teaching activities on courses relevant to your expertise.

The position will be filled for a fixed term of two and a half years from 1 February 2026 (or starting date as agreed) due to the position pertaining to a specific project task. A trial period is applied to all new members of the staff.

Our university is a diverse working and studying environment, where inclusion and equality are promoted. We encourage and welcome applications regardless of age, gender, cultural background and nationality.

The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment, the total salary will be approximately EUR 3,825 – 4,020 /month.
