Senior Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher on systems biology

We are inviting application for a Senior researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences (http://www.uef.fi/en/web/envbio), in Inhalation Toxicology Laboratory. The position will be filled from 1.1.2024 or as agreed. Please submit your application no later than 13 October 2023.

Role and salary

We are seeking for a highly motivated candidate with experience in multidisciplinary research on Environmental Health, Systems Biology, Toxicology or Biochemistry. The research in the open position will be related to health effects of exposure to environmental contaminants, focusing on air pollution and co-exposures with other physical and biological environmental exposures. Our research is based on using in vitro and in vivo models in combination with epidemiological data towards understanding the biological mechanisms underlaying disease onset or worsening due to environmental exposures. The applicants’ research should complement, utilize and build on the department's strong expertise in environmental health, specifically toxicology of airborne exposures. The researcher is expected to take part in supervising MSc and PhD students, scientific writing, grant applications, scientific collaborations and teaching in suitable areas.

The position can be filled by using the title of Senior Researcher or Postdoctoral Researcher. The title will be specified according to the qualifications and merits of the selected person.

The position will be filled from 1 January 2024 (or as agreed) to 30 June 2028 due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of a Senior Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 5-7 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€3 150–€4 235/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component. The salary of a Postdoctoral Researcher will be approximately € 3 657–€3 846 per month and the salary of a Senior Researcher will be approximately € 4 264–€5 170 per month at the beginning of the employment.

Requirements 

• The person to be appointed to the position is expected to hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field (The person to be appointed as Postdoctoral Researcher the doctoral degree may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of starting of the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves, military service etc.))
• A person appointed as a Senior researcher must also have good teaching skills. Teaching merits of the candidate are provided by the teaching portfolio.
• Good spoken and written English skills. English is used as the language of instruction and supervision in this position.

Expectations

• The successful candidate is expected to work on large datasets and have previous experience in combining multidisciplinary datasets and take responsibility on developing the research in the area of systems biology or multi-endpoint analyses of environmental health research.
• Applicants’ understanding of multilayered pathways and overlapping networks as well as skills in analysing data from high throughput systems (omics-data) and combining clinical and experimental data sets will be appreciated.
• Applicants are expected to have experience in organizing and executing toxicological and/or clinical studies as well as profound understanding of biological systems and biological processes.
• Experience in Environmental Health, Systems Biology or Toxicology or Biochemistry in multidisciplinary research projects is seen as an advantage.
• Experience in applying for research funding and supervision of PhD theses are also an asset.
