The Philosophical Faculty, School of Humanities

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) -funded aTOOR project is looking for a Data Scientist to work with virtual reality (VR) and motion analysis at the University of Eastern Finland on the Joensuu campus. The position is part-time (50 %) and will be filled from 1 February 2026 to 31– October 2027. Please find more information below and submit your application no later than 7 January 2026.

Role and salary

The aTOOR (Advanced Technologies as Tools for Teletherapy) project develops new technology-based methods and operational models for remote therapy. The project addresses regional challenges in North Karelia and Eastern Finland: the availability of therapy services in sparsely populated areas and the shortage of speech therapists. The project invests in virtual reality technology, 360° imaging technology, and motion detection methods that enable the development of objective and partly location-independent therapy methods.

We are looking for a candidate to mainly work with data analysis, and who will support the development and implementation of technology-based methods for remote speech therapy. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop your skills while working with cutting-edge technologies. The position involves activities in three key areas:

In virtual reality and 360° video development, the person will participate in developing and implementing virtual reality for speech therapy applications, and will test and optimize a VR application as well as video-based assessments. In data management and analysis, the person will implement data collection and analysis tools for user experience data, analyse pilot testing data from target groups, and integrate behavioural research and brain imaging data. Additionally, the position involves creating technical documentation and training materials, including documenting the methods and technical solutions developed, creating user guides and tutorial videos, providing technical support and training to project partners, and contributing to scientific publications and reports.

Throughout all work packages, the analyst will work closely with speech therapy professionals and regional companies, participate in workshops and project meetings, support the dissemination of project results, and collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams.

As our new colleague, you will be working in the Philosophical Faculty and the LogoLab infrastructure. The position is located on the Joensuu campus, and flexible arrangements for the actual placement can be negotiated. We offer an opportunity to join a vibrant interdisciplinary team.

The position is part time (50%) and will be filled for a fixed term from 1 February 2026 to 31 October 2027. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Data Scientist, the job-related salary element is based on level 9 of the job requirement level chart for other expert and support staff.
