The Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, Department of Physics and Mathematics

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Theoretical Quantum Photonics at the Department of Physics and Mathematics on the Joensuu Campus. The position will be filled for a fixed 2-year term from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2026 (or as agreed).

Please find more information below and submit your application no later than 15 March 2024.

Role and salary

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with strong mathematical skills and expertise in quantum optical physics to conduct postdoctoral research in our recently established Theoretical Quantum Photonics (TQP) group. The person appointed to this position will be enrolled in a project funded by the Research Council of Finland (PI: Andreas Norrman). The project focuses on the foundations of the geometric phase in quantized light fields, wave-particle duality in vector-light interferometry, quantum uncertainty of optical correlations, three-dimensional quantum polarization states, and structured quantum light in nanoscale interactions. The work planned for the position is theoretical and encompasses mainly analytical research on these topics.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:

  • advancing quantum photonics research at our university,
  • producing high-quality scientific publications,
  • presenting the research at international conferences,
  • developing new research questions and proposals within our group.

Other responsibilities include mentoring and supervising PhD students as well as taking part in scientific collaborations. You may also have the possibility to participate in teaching activities in courses relevant to your expertise.

The position will be filled for a fixed 2-year term, from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2026 (or as agreed), due to it pertaining to a specific project task. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately EUR 3,730-3,925 /month at the beginning of the employment.

Our requirements and expectations

Requirements:

  • doctoral degree in physics, optics, photonics, or some other relevant field.

The doctoral degree must not have been completed more than five years ago at the starting of the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves, military service, etc.).

Persons graduating with a doctoral degree by the end of March and whose doctoral thesis topic is particularly relevant to this call will also be considered eligible to apply.

  • good skills in oral and written English.

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • strong background in quantum optical physics,
  • excellent mathematical (especially analytical) skills,
  • demonstrated competence to disseminate scientific results.
