The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for Postdoctoral Researcher position in atmospheric aerosol research at the Department of Technical Physics on the Kuopio campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term from 01.08.2024 (or starting date as agreed).

Role and salary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to do research in the field of atmospheric processes. In these positions, you will be working in the Department of Technical Physics at the Faculty of Forestry, Science, and Technology, on the Kuopio campus. The work is related to the European Commission funded project CERTAINTY, which aims at improving the knowledge of aerosols, clouds, and their influence on weather and climate.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher your main responsibilities will include:

  • making atmospheric simulations,
  • analyzing simulated data,
  • comparing model data to atmospheric observations.

The primary goal of the Postdoctoral Researcher is to investigate aerosol-cloud interactions and their effects on weather and climate using data from laboratory experiments, field measurements, satellite retrievals, and atmospheric models.

The Postdoctoral Researcher can take part in meetings and research visits abroad which requires willingness to work internationally.

The position for the Postdoctoral Researcher will be filled for a fixed 2-year term, from 01.08.2024 to 31.07.2026 (or as agreed), due to it pertaining to a specific project task. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is EUR 3,210 /month, based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately EUR 3,730-3,920 €/month at the beginning of the employment.

Our requirements and expectations

Requirements:

  • The person to be appointed to the position of Postdoctoral Researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree in disciplines such as physics, meteorology, atmospheric sciences, geosciences, climate sciences, or another relevant field.

The doctoral degree may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leave, military service, etc.).

Doctoral students in the final stages of a degree that make them eligible to apply may also apply, provided that they have their public examination of their Dissertation scheduled for May.

  • Potential candidates should have a good command of written and spoken English (working language is English).

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • Experience in mathematical modelling and numerical programming,
  • Willingness to work internationally, including meetings and research visits abroad,
  • Experience in numerical programming languages (e.g. Python, Fortran),
  • Good computer, communication and organizational skills,
  • Ability to carry out independent research and work as part of a team.

Furthermore, it will be beneficial for a successful candidate to meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience in modeling aerosol-cloud interactions and software related to such modeling,
  • Experience in handling of large datasets, e.g., good knowledge of post processing and analyzing atmospheric model data,
  • Good understanding of atmospheric dynamics,
  • Experience in high performance computing platform.

Haemme tutkijatohtoria Itä-Suomen Yliopiston CERTAINTY-tutkimusprojektiin. Tehtävä sijoittuu luonnontieteiden, metsätieteiden ja tekniikan tiedekuntaan teknillisen fysiikan laitokselle Kuopion kampukselle. Tehtävä alkaa 1.8.2024 ja se täytetään kahden vuoden määräajaksi (1.8.2024 - 31.7.2026). Tässä tehtävässä tehtäväkohtainen palkanosa on vaativuustasoluokittelussa tasolla 5.
