The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a permanent Staff Scientist position in the School of Medicine on the Kuopio campus. The position will be filled from 1 June (or as agreed). Please find more information below and submit your application by 14 March 2025.

Role and salary

We are seeking a Staff Scientist for a permanent position in the School of Medicine to develop the Cell and Tissue Imaging Unit at the Institute of Biomedicine.

In the role of a Staff Scientist, you will manage and work with advanced light microscopy techniques, biological image processing methods, and imaging data analyses. Additionally, you will be the key person in the comprehensive development of the Imaging Unit, including the enhancement of its operations and services. Your responsibilities will also include planning and implementation of projects, preparation of funding applications, and participating in teaching and training sessions. As the new Staff Scientist of the Institute of Biomedicine, your main responsibilities will include

  • leading and participating in the daily tasks of the Imaging Unit, as well as developing service operations.
  • the daily tasks will include the management of the use of light and fluorescence microscopy techniques, including automated high-throughput and high content screening technologies as well as the analysis of large imaging files.
  • collaborating within national imaging networks, developing services, carrying out data management, and image analyses, as well as standardizing national guidelines and practices.
  • organizing teaching, training, and workshops for the needs of UEF's research communities, as well as national and international users.

The position is filled from 1 June 2025 (or as agreed). The position is a full-time position. The probationary period of 6 months is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. In this position, the job requirement level is based on levels 6-7 (EUR 3,747.44 – 4,320.23) of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element is 6 - 50% of the job-related salary element. Depending on the personal salary element, the salary will be approximately EUR 4,120 – 5,230 /month.

  • A relevant doctoral degree and a proven track record of imaging-related research projects.
  • Strong experience in light microscopy techniques, biological image processing, and imaging data analyses.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills in a multidisciplinary and international work environment.
  • Excellent English language skills

  • Experience in working with research infrastructures, including service design, and understanding their development.
  • Experience in high-throughput and high-content screening technologies.
  • Experience in analysing and managing large imaging files, as well as utilizing artificial intelligence in image analysis and algorithm development.
