The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for two Trainee/Research Trainee positions in the school of Forest Sciences. The positions will be filled from 1.6.2024 (or as agreed).

Role and salary 

We are looking for two Trainees/Research Trainees in the School of Forest Sciences at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology for summer 2024 to work in research projects on peatland ecology. Our main themes are peatland vegetation and greenhouse gas fluxes under changing climate and the impacts of peatland restoration on vegetation and carbon gas fluxes. Work tasks are related to the several projects in the Peatland and Soil Ecology Research Group (Peat&Trees) lead by Professor Eeva-Stiina Tuittila and Anna Laine-Petäjäkangas, and to ICOS network (Integrated Carbon Observation System). The chosen Trainee/Research Trainee will work in one or several of these projects, which will be agreed together. The positions are located in Joensuu campus. 

As our new Trainee/Research Trainee, your main responsibilities, will include: 

  • Vegetation inventories, leaf area measurements and measuring plant functional traits. 
  • Greenhouse gas measuremnet using chamber technique of and data processing.
  • Additionally, work may include small tasks related to the maintenance of monitoring system and cameras in an art installation in the peatland during the summer.

The work tasks can be done at Hyytiälä or North Carelia between the timeframe 1.6.2024-31.8.2024. Close to the Hyytiälä forestry field station (Juupajoki, Finland) we run a pristine peatland study site in Siikaneva, that is part of the ICOS network and a long-term experimental site in Lakkasuo where we study the impacts of climate change. We study peatland restoration in Piitsonsuo peatland, Ilomantsi.  

We offer an opportunity to work as a part of an international research group and become familiar with different research projects and methods. It is also possible to write a Master’s thesis based on the collected data (the title will be Research Trainee).

We will hire two Trainees/Research Trainees and the positions will be filled between period 1.6.2024 - 31.8.2024. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project tasks and internship.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. In the position of Research Trainee, the salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. In the Research Trainee position, the job requirement component is on level 1 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum. Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately 2,350 €/month as Research Trainee. The salary of Trainee will be approximately 2,235 €/month. 

Our requirements and expectations   

Requirements 

  • Higher education studies and in a related field, such as forestry, biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, or biogeography, 
  • good command of the English language, 
  • ability to work independently in the field and 
  • a driver’s license. 

The following will be considered an advantage: 

  • interest in peatland ecology and,
  • species identification skills of peatland plants and experience in GHG exchange measurements are beneficial.
