The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Project Researcher position on the Institute of Biomedicine, Kuopio Campus. Role and salary 

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Bioinformatician or Computational Biologist (PhD or MSc) interested in a career path as a core facility expert to join the UEF Bioinformatics Center. The goal of the bioinformatics core facility is to contribute to research excellence through standard and customized omics data analysis, as well as to implement innovative machine learning, data integrative and multimodal solutions. The hosting core facility is located in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, on the UEF Kuopio campus. The infrastructure is also part of the Biocenter Finland Bioinformatics Platform.

The Project Researcher will participate in research projects and develop biomedical and multimodal data analysis solutions for UEF Research Communities in cancer, metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. You will join the growing local network of bioinformaticians. Depending on your profile and experience, you will have the opportunity to develop your expertise in multiomics analyses, combining omics and imaging data with clinical data from local cohorts and other resources such as FinnGen. UEF core facilities in single-cell genomics, metabolomics and biomedical imaging will offer opportunities to network with domain experts. You will have access to the local high throughput computational infrastructure of the Bioinformatics Center and the Finnish national computational infrastructure of CSC. The position also offers an opportunity to participate in teaching.

The main responsibilities of the Project Researcher include:

  • collaborating with biomedical and data analysis experts in research projects,
  • pre-processing and analysing different types of omics, multiomics or multimodal data, and
  • developing state-of-the-art workflows.

The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 May 2024 (or starting date as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project tasks. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.  

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two elements: a job requirement element and a personal performance element. In these positions, the job-related salary element is based on level 5–6 (PhD) and level 3–4 (MSc) of the job requirement level chart, and the personal salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. The estimated monthly salary at the beginning of the employment will be EUR 3.534 – 4.497/month for a PhD and EUR 2.689– 3.330 /month for a MSc.
 
Our requirements and expectations

We welcome highly motivated applicants with a bioinformatics or data science background and a high interest in biomedical data analysis.

Requirements  

  • The person to be appointed as a Project Researcher must hold a PhD or MSc in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or a related field. Applicants with a PhD or MSc degree from other fields must demonstrate to have substantial experience in bioinformatics data analysis.
  • Good understanding of machine learning methods.
  • Experience in the analysis of at least one of the following data types:
    • Genome or phenome-wide association
    • Bulk or single-cell transcriptomics
    • Bulk or single-cell epigenomics
    • Proteomics or metabolomics
  • Strong skills in R programming, Linux shell scripting and Python or other relevant scripting language.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills.
  • Good communication skills as well as a high degree of independence and initiative.

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • Experience in GWAS, metabolomics, knowledge graphs or other multimodal data analysis.
  • Experience in the use of containers and version control.
